Selection Quick Reference

  • Standard preheater & calciner (up to 1100 C): 310S (S31008) — industry standard, 25Cr-20Ni for excellent oxidation resistance, available in V/Y/wavy custom shapes
  • High-stress zones with thermal cycling: 253MA (S30815) — N + Ce micro-alloyed for 40% higher creep strength at 1000 C vs 310S, ideal for expansion joint areas
  • Alternative fuel kilns / corrosion attack: Alloy 601 (N06601) — 60% Ni with Al addition for superior alkali/sulfur/chlorine resistance in co-processing environments
  • Top stage preheater / cooling zone: 304 (S30400) — cost-effective for <900 C zones with clean gas composition
  • All grades available in V-type, Y-type, wavy, cross-bar, and custom configurations with 3-12 mm wire diameter

Preheater Anchor – FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What anchor types and shapes are available, and how do I choose the right one?

ZHILI manufactures six standard anchor configurations for cement plant refractory applications, each optimized for specific lining types and installation conditions:

  • V-type anchor: Simplest, most common design. Two legs bent at 45-60 degrees. Best for brick lining where anchors are welded to shell and embedded in mortar. Wire 5-8 mm for standard use.
  • Y-type anchor: Three-leg design for higher holding strength. Ideal for thick castable linings (50-150 mm) in cyclones and calciner roofs. 40% higher pull-out resistance vs V-type.
  • Wavy / sinusoidal: Continuous wave-form wire for large area coverage. Excellent for thin castable lining (25-50 mm) where maximum surface density is needed.
  • Cross-bar anchor: Double wire with welded cross bars. Heavy-duty option for thick refractory linings (100-250 mm) in high-stress areas.
V-Type (Brick)
5-8 mm wire
Y-Type (Castable)
6-10 mm wire
Wavy (Thin Lining)
3-5 mm wire
Cross-Bar (Thick)
8-12 mm wire

Not sure which type? Send us your lining specification (brick vs castable, thickness, area) and our technical team will recommend the optimal anchor type and density pattern.

2 Which material grade should I use for different preheater zones and temperatures?

Material selection for refractory anchors depends on service temperature, gas composition, and whether the anchor is embedded in insulating or hot-face refractory. The metal temperature at the anchor tip is typically 100-200 C below the gas temperature due to the insulating effect of the refractory lining.

Stage 1-2 (<750 C gas)
304 (S30400)
Stage 3-4 (750-950 C)
310S (S31008)
Stage 5 / Calciner
253MA (S30815)
Alt Fuel Kilns
601 (N06601)
  • 310S (S31008) is the standard choice for most preheater stages. 25Cr-20Ni provides excellent oxidation resistance up to 1100 C metal temperature.
  • Upgrade to 253MA (S30815) in the calciner and Stage 5 where thermal cycling is severe. The N+Ce micro-alloying increases creep strength by 40% at 1000 C.
  • Alloy 601 (N06601) for co-processing kilns: High Ni (60%) + Al (1.7%) forms a protective alumina scale that resists alkali, sulfur, and chlorine attack in alternative fuel environments.
  • Anchor tip temperature rule: For gas temperature X, estimate anchor metal temperature at X-150 C for hot-face mounted, X-250 C for mid-depth embedded anchors.
3 What is the recommended anchor spacing, and how many anchors do I need?

Anchor spacing is critical for refractory lining integrity. Too few anchors = lining collapse; too many = excessive heat conduction through the shell. Here are field-proven density guidelines based on lining type and temperature zone:

Brick Lining
4-6 anchors/m2
Castable <100 mm
8-12 anchors/m2
Castable 100-200 mm
12-16 anchors/m2
Castable >200 mm
16-25 anchors/m2
  • Staggered pattern: Always install anchors in a staggered (diamond) pattern, not aligned rows. This distributes stress evenly and prevents straight-line crack propagation in the castable.
  • Edge spacing: Maintain 50-75 mm from lining edges and expansion joints. Anchors too close to edges cause corner spalling.
  • Roof/overhead areas: Increase density by 30-50% for overhead installations. Use Y-type anchors for better vertical holding.
  • Anchor tip position: Embed the anchor at 50-75% of lining thickness. Full-depth embedding wastes material and creates hot spots. Partial embedding at the hot face provides optimal support.

Quick calculation: Number of anchors = Area (m2) x Anchor Density. Example: 50 m2 cyclone roof at 20 anchors/m2 = 1,000 Y-type 253MA anchors. We can provide pre-packaged anchor kits for standard cyclone sizes.
