Grate coolers use an alternating fixed and movable plate design to transport clinker while cooling it with forced air. Each plate type has distinct wear characteristics and replacement triggers:

2 How does the slot design affect cooling performance, and what patterns are available?

The air slot design is critical to cooler efficiency. It must balance three competing requirements: maximum airflow for cooling, minimum clinker fall-through, and structural integrity of the plate. ZHILI offers several slot patterns optimized for different cooler zones:

  • Narrow straight slots (3-5 mm): For hot zone fixed plates where clinker is still plastic/sticky. Narrow gaps prevent liquid-phase clinker from penetrating while maintaining high air velocity. Air velocity through slots: 40-60 m/s.
  • Wide straight slots (5-8 mm): For mid-zone plates where clinker has solidified. Higher airflow volume for maximum heat recovery. Reduced clogging risk from fine particles.
  • Louvered / angled slots (30-45 degrees): For movable plates. The angled design directs cooling air against clinker flow direction, improving heat transfer efficiency by 15-20% compared to vertical slots.

3 How do I identify my grate plates and order replacement sets without OEM documentation?

Many older cement plants operate coolers where original drawings are lost or the OEM no longer supports the model. ZHILI specializes in reverse-engineering grate plates from minimal information:

  • Plate dimensions: Length x width x thickness in millimeters. Include bolt hole count, spacing, and diameter. A smartphone photo with a ruler placed on the plate works perfectly.
  • Cooler type confirmation: Is it a cross-bar (FLSmidth), pendulum (IKN), or conventional reciprocating grate (KHD/Sinoma)? Even a photo of the cooler from outside helps identify the model.
